QUESTION

Views sent to my layout change when I modify my floor plan. How can I prevent this from happening?

ANSWER

Since plan and layout files are dynamically linked, when you make a change to the plan model, the floor plan views sent to the layout page automatically change, as well.  This behavior is helpful because it prevents the need to resend views to layout every time the plan is updated.

There are times, however, when you may not want this behavior.  If you would like to send a floor plan view or cross section/elevation view to layout and make sure that it never updates when changes are made to the plan model, you can either send the view to layout as an image instead of as a dynamically-linked view, or you can convert it into a CAD Detail first.

Sending a view to layout as an image is a bit quicker of these two options, however, it does not let you specify a print scale.  If you need a scaled view that does not update when changes are made to the model, you will want to convert it into a CAD Detail.

To send a view to layout as an image

  1. Open the view that you would like to send to layout and zoom or pan as necessary so that the view you wish to send to layout fills the view window.

  2. Select File> Send to Layout  from the menu.

  3. In the Send to Layout dialog, under Send Options, select Current Screen as Image, then click OK.

    • Note that when Current Screen as Image is selected, the Scaling and other Send Options settings become unavailable.

To send a view to layout as a CAD Detail

  1. Open the line-based view that you would like to send to layout and select CAD> CAD Detail from View  from the menu.

  2. The current view will be converted into a 2D line drawing in a new CAD Detail window. You can confirm this by checking the program's Title Bar, which will state the plan's name followed by ": Detail #".

  3. Select CAD> CAD Detail Management  from the menu, and in the CAD Detail Management dialog:

    • Find the name of your new CAD Detail and click on it to select it.

    • Click the Rename button, then type a short, descriptive name for the detail.

    • Click OK to close the Rename CAD Detail dialog, then click OK once more to close the CAD Detail Management dialog as well.

  4. Make any changes that you would like to the drawing in the CAD Detail window, such as adding or removing CAD objects or text.

  5. Select File> Print> Drawing Sheet Setup  from the menu and specify the desired Drawing Scale for the drawing.

  6. Select File> Save  from the menu to save the detail with the plan.

  7. Select File> Send to Layout  from the menu. In the Send to Layout dialog:

    • Confirm that the correct drawing scale is being used.

    • Select either Entire Plan/View or Current Screen under Send Options.

    • Click OK to send the drawing in the CAD Detail view to layout.
