I would like to design a home office space. How can I do this?
Home offices are very popular features in homes today and can be used for many different tasks, from running a home-based business to organizing and paying household bills, to doing homework. The space needed for a home office varies widely, depending on what it will be used for.
You can use the tools in the Chief Architect programs to design a home office that meets both your organizational needs and any space limitations that you may have.
In this example, we will create a micro-office in a closet.
The first step in planning a home office is to draw the existing space that you plan to create the office in, and then determine how much space is needed for important tasks such as sitting and writing. Also remember to set aside sufficient space for tools such as your computer and monitor.
In this article, we will be using the following catalogs from the Chief Architect 3D Library:
To plan your space
- First launch Chief Architect and Open the plan in which you would like to design a home office or select File> New Plan from the menu to open a new, blank plan.
- Before planning how the space will be organized, it's important that the dimensions of the actual area be used.
- In this example a closet measuring 3ft. by 7ft. is used.
- You can create room labels if you wish by selecting a Room Type on the General panel of the Room Specification dialog.
- Let's start by placing a desk in our space.
- For this example we will be using the Table w/ Counter symbol found under Chief Architect Bonus Catalogs> Office Accessories> Work Stations in the Library Browser .
- Place the desk inside the closet and resize it to fill the space.
- Now select Build> Cabinet> Base Cabinet from the menu and place the cabinet just outside the closet.
- Select the cabinet and click Open Object , then make the following modifications to the cabinet through the Base Cabinet Specification dialog:
- Under the General panel:
- Set the Height to 27".
- Set the Width to 24".
- Set the Depth to 36".
- Countertop Thickness and Overhang to 0".
- Backsplash Height and Thickness to 0".
- Toe Kick Depth to 0".
- Check Flat Sides, Flat Back, and Closed Toe.
- Now click on the door of the cabinet in the preview on the right to modify it.
- Click the Delete button.
- Click the opening in the preview to select it.
- Change the Item Type to a Drawer.
- Click OK to accept these changes.
- Select the cabinet and drag it into position under the desk while holding the Ctrl key on the keyboard to prevent bumping/pushing.
- On a Mac hold down the Command Key on the keyboard to override bumping/pushing.
- Select 3D> Create Orthographic View> Cross Section/Elevation from the menu and create an elevation of your office area.
- Using the Select Objects tool, select the base cabinet and click the Copy/Paste edit button.
- Left-click and drag the copy over to the other side of the desk.
Adding detail to your space
We are now ready to add additional detail such as wall cabinets, desktop accessories, etc..
- Select View> Library Browser from the menu.
- For this example we will be using the bonus catalog Cabinet Specialty Storage for the wall cabinets.
- Select the cabinets and change the door to a door panel.
- Click Library and choose a shelf or door style from the catalog.
In this example we have used the Cross Storage for the two side cabinets and Letter Storage for the center cabinet. Both are found under the Cabinet Specialty Storage catalog.
- We can now use other items from different catalogs to add more detail. Here we have used various items from the Nautical Decor and Bonus Office Accessories catalogs.
