Having lost data in the past, I recognize the need to regularly back up my Chief Architect files.

Which files should I back up and what kind of service should I look for?

If you want real-time, off-site backup then an online backup service is the way to go. No need to be concerned about data security - many services will encrypt your data before, during, and after it's been sent to the backup servers. Most online backup services can start at a scheduled time, or just run in the background when you choose.

A few points to consider:

  • In addition to your plan files it is a good idea to back up your custom library content, toolbars, and archives. see the Related Articles section for additional information on what files to back up.

  • Be sure that your backup service is not backing up your files while they are in use.

  • It's extremely important to always remember to only work on plans that are saved on your local machine's hard drive. Never work on files directly over a network server, external hard drive, or usb flash drive. Doing so can also lead to file corruption and data loss.

  • Keeping this in mind, be careful when using a cloud service which will store your files on the cloud though they have a virtual link to your local hard drive.
