QUESTION

When I place a cabinet foot or leg from the Library Browser, its appearance in 2D doesn't seem to match its appearance in 3D.  Why is that?

ANSWER

Cabinet feet and legs are designed to be assigned to cabinets via the Cabinet Specification dialog, so their symbol origin reflects their placement relative to a cabinet.

In some instances, though, cabinet feet must be placed independently.  For example, Angled Front cabinets do not support cabinet feet assigned to them in the Cabinet Specification dialog. If we place cabinet feet from the library directly under a cabinet without making any changes, they may look correct in floor plan view but be offset when viewed in 3D.

In this case, if feet are required they must be placed manually and then edited.

Although cabinet leg and foot symbols are set up to be applied to cabinets rather than be placed independently, they can be easily edited to work well as independent objects.

To change the origin of an independently placed cabinet foot

  1. Launch Chief Architect and open a New Plan

  2. Select Library> Library Browser  to open the Library Browser window, then:

    • Search or browse to find a cabinet foot or leg that suits your needs;

    • Select it in the tree list or preview pane;

    • Click in the drawing area to place it.

    • In this example, we are using a symbol from Manufacturer Catalogs> Adams Wood Products> Cabinet & Sofa Legs> A0535-HB45.

  3. Using the Select Objects tool, select the cabinet foot, then click the Open Symbol edit button.

  4. On the 3D tab of the Symbol Specification dialog:

    • Check the box beside Specify Origin;

    • Change the X, Y and Z values all to 0";

    • Click OK to close the dialog and apply your changes.

To position an independently placed cabinet foot under a cabinet

  1. Using the Select Objects tool, select the cabinet foot and click the Open Object edit button. On the General tab of the Millwork Specification dialog:

    • Make a note of the Height value;

    • Click Cancel without making any changes;

    • A0535-HB45's Height is 4 1/2".

  2. Select Build> Cabinet> Base Cabinet , then click in your plan to place a single base cabinet.

  3. Click on the cabinet to select it, then click the Open Object edit button. On the General tab of the Base Cabinet Specification dialog:

    • Specify the Floor to Bottom value so that it is equal to the Height of the cabinet foot that you wish to place under the cabinet - in this case, 4 1/2";

    • Reduce the Height of the selected cabinet by this same amount. In this case 36" minus 4 1/2" results in a Height of 31 1/2".

  4. On the Front tab of the Base Cabinet Specification dialog:

    • Click on the toekick in the cabinet preview on the right side of the dialog box;

    • With the toekick highlighted, click the Delete button;

    • Click OK to close the dialog and apply your changes.

  5. Using the Select Objects tool, select the cabinet foot and move it into position under one corner of the cabinet using its Move  edit handle.

    • If you encounter any movement restrictions, hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard while you drag the Move handle.

  6. Use the Copy/Paste  edit tool to make as many copies of the cabinet foot as needed and move them into position, as well.

  7. These cabinet feet will display in the correct position in both 2D and 3D views.

MORE INFORMATION

If you would like to use this symbol in future plans, select the cabinet foot and click the Add to Library edit tool. This will add the symbol to your Library Browser where you can  rename it, and place it into a custom folder to suit your organizational needs.
