QUESTION

I downloaded my copy of Chief Architect rather than purchase the product on DVD, but I'd like to save a copy of the installer in case I need it.  How can I do this?

ANSWER

Making a backup copy of downloaded data like a program installer is a good idea because online vendors will rarely make a download available indefinitely.

Chief Architect is an exception in that the download will be available to you as long as you are a current Support and Software Assurance member; however, only the current program version installer will be posted on your Digital Locker page.

For archival purposes, it is a good idea to save a backup installer for all program versions that you have used.

To back up a program installer, first, decide how you want to back up the file.  A variety of different options are available.  You can, for example:

  • Burn the file onto a DVD;
  • Copy the file to a removable storage device such as a USB flash drive;
  • Copy the file to a server or other location on your network;
  • Copy the file to an online storage site or have your backup service do it for you.

By default, the Chief Architect program installer will be downloaded into a folder named Downloads located in your Documents directory (My Documents on Windows XP).

The name of the file will vary depending on what version of the program installer you have, but in general, the file name will begin with the product title, followed by a version number, and ending with the .msi (Microsoft Installer) file extension.

Please note that you may also have downloaded a copy of the Chief Architect Downloader, which is a download manager.  This file's name will begin with the product title, followed by the word downloader, followed by the .exe file extension. So, the name of the Chief Architect Premier X3 Downloader file is Chief_Architect_Premier_X4_downloader.exe.  The download manager is only useful when you are actually downloading the program installer and does NOT need to be backed up.
