QUESTION

I have created a custom material and would like to rotate it so that its pattern and texture run in a different direction in 3D views such as shown in the tile bathroom shower image below.  How can I do this?

ANSWER

In Chief Architect, materials display a pattern in vector views and a texture in render views.  Both can be rotated as needed in the Define Material dialog.

To rotate a material's pattern
In vector views, materials are represented using patterns.

  1. Open a Chief Architect plan in which you would like to rotate a material's pattern and texture.

  2. Click on 3D>Materials >Plan Materials .

  3. In the Plan Materials dialog:

    • Make sure that the material you wish to edit is selected.

    • Click the Copy button on the right.

  4. On the Pattern tab of the Define Material dialog:

In Chief Architect X2 and prior, select the General tab of the Define Material dialog.

  • Specify the desired Angle to which you would like to rotate the material's pattern.

  • Notice that the Material Name begins with "Copy of...".  Edit this name so that it is more descriptive

If you would like to adjust the origin of the pattern, you can do so on the Pattern tab of the Define Material dialog.

When you are satisfied with the changes you have made to your new material, click OK to close the Define Material dialog and return to Plan Materials dialog.

You can access the Define Material dialog for this material to make changes at any time by following steps 2 through 4, above, and clicking the Edit button instead of the Copy button in the Plan Materials dialog.

  1. Apply the material to your object.

  2. To see the results, select 3D> Create Orthographic View> Cross Section/Elevation  from the menu and click and drag a camera arrow towards the object.

In Chief Architect X1 and prior, use 3D> Create Vector View> Cross Section/Elevation.

To rotate a material's texture:
In render views, materials are represented using textures.

  1. Click on 3D> Materials > Plan Materials .

  2. In the Plan Material dialog, make sure that the material you wish to rotate is selected, then click the Edit button.

  3. On the Texture tab of the Define Material dialog:

    • Specify the desired Angle for this material.

    • If you would like to adjust the Origin of the pattern, you can do so here, as well.

    • When you are satisfied with your changes, click OK to close the Define Material dialog.

  4. Apply the material to your object.

  5. To see the results, select 3D> Create Perspective Camera> Full Camera , from the menu and click and drag a camera arrow towards the object.

In Chief Architect X1 and prior use 3D> Create Render View> Render Full Camera.
