How do I make an energy heel truss?
For energy efficiency, some areas recommend an energy heel, or raised heel, so that there is not a cold spot in the intersection where the roof meets the wall. An energy heel raises the roof, and allows for more insulation to reach the outside wall.
To build the roof
- Open the Chief Architect plan in which you want to create the energy heel trusses.
- Click Build> Roof> Build Roof
to bring up the Build Roof dialog.
- On the Build Roof dialog put a check mark in Build Roof Planes and Trusses (no Birdsmouth).
- Remove the checkmark from Automatic Birdsmouth Cut and specify the Raise Off Plate setting to the height you want the energy heel. In this example we use 12 Inches.
- Click OK
To build the energy heel truss
- Click Build> Framing> Roof Truss
.
- Click and drag to draw a roof truss.
- Using the Select Objects
tool, select the roof truss and then use the Open Object
tool to open the Roof Truss Specification dialog.
- On the General tab of this dialog we want to put a checkmark in Energy Heel and Force Truss Rebuild.
- Click OK
To use the Multiple Copy tool to copy the truss across the structure
- Move the truss to the outside edge of your structure.
- With the truss still selected click on the Multiple Copy
tool.
- Click on the Multiple Copy Interval
tool and verify that the All Trusses is set to the desired spacing and click OK
- Move your cursor over the Move edit handle of the truss. You will notice that your cursor changes to the multiple copy cursor.
- Click and drag across your plan to place trusses at regular intervals.
- Click 3D> Create Perspective View> Framing Overview to see the results.
