QUESTION

How do I set up the default materials for stairs before they are drawn?

ANSWER

There is not a defaults dialog for stairs. Instead, the default materials for stairs are specified in the General Material Defaults dialog.

To set up default materials for stairs

  1. Select File> New Plan  from the menu to open a new, blank plan or select File> Open Plan  to open an existing plan file in which you would like to specify the default materials for stairs.

  2. Select Edit> Default Settings  from the menu to open the Default Settings dialog.

  3. Click Materials, then click the Edit button.

    • In Chief Architect X2 and prior click the + beside Materials, then click General Materials, then click the Edit button.

  4. In the Material Defaults dialog:

    • Click on a category in the list on the left.

    • Click the Library Material button to search the Library Browser for a suitable material for this category.

    • Click the Plan Material button to search the Plan Materials dialog for a suitable material already referenced by this plan file.

    • Click OK when you are satisfied with your selections.

  5. The following general material categories affect stairs, as well as other related objects:

    • Balusters - Affects the balusters and stringers of stairs, as well as the balusters of railings.

    • Floor - Affects the runner, if one is created, as well as the floor covering for rooms if a default has not been selected in the corresponding Room Materials dialog.

    • Railings - Affects the handrail and newels of stairs, as well as the handrail of railings.

    • Stair Tread - Affects the stair treads.
