My hardware lock isn't working

The information in this article applies to:

Chief Architect X3
Chief Architect X2
Chief Architect X1
Chief Architect 10-7

DESCRIPTION

I just got a new computer or upgraded my operating system and now my hardware lock isn't working.  One of the following error messages appears when I try to launch Chief Architect:

    • HASP Device Driver Installing the Device drivers failed. Failed to start the Aladdin Device Driver. Failed to start a service in the Service Control Manager Database

    • No Appropriate Hardware Lock Was Found

    • Missing file aks.usb

How do I resolve this issue?

IMPORTANT NOTE

If your version of Chief Architect is running on an unsupported operating system, following the steps in this article may not resolve the issue.

If you do not know which versions of Windows that you particular version of chief Architect is supported under, then please see Article Number 23: What operating systems does Chief Architect run on?

Chief Architect X2 and newer versions utilize Software Lock Security by default, instead of a hardware lock security device.  For information on this type of security, see the following online Help Database article: http://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/displayfaq.php?faqNumber=937

RESOLUTION

Downloading and installing an updated hardware lock driver will resolve this issue.

You may also use this driver to fix issues that occur when Microsoft downloads a new driver for your HASP lock. This new driver from Microsoft does not work with Chief Architect.

To download the updated driver

  1. Click the link below to download the appropriate driver:

    SafeNet Sentinel:

    http://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/downloads/drivers/Sentinel_Protection_Installer_7.4.0.exe

If you are using the SafeNet Seninel hardware lock for Chief Architect X2 or newer on Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system, then you may need to check their website directly for the newest driver at: http://www.safenet-inc.com/support_and_downloads/download_drivers/sentinel_drivers.aspx

    Aladdin HASP:

    http://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/downloads/drivers/hdd32.exe

  2. In the File Download dialog, click the Save button.

  3. In the Save As dialog, save the file on your computer's Desktop

To install the new driver

  1. In your Windows Control Panel, access Add or Remove Programs.

  2. Search for the HASP Device Driver or Sentinel Protection Installer, depending on your version of the hardware lock.

If found, click on the HASP Device Driver or Sentinel Protection Installer, and select Remove or Uninstall.

If the Device Driver is not found in Add or Remove Programs, proceed to step 3.

  3. Browse to the downloaded hdd32.exe or Sentinel_Protection_Installer file and double click it to install the drivers.

  4. You will be prompted that the driver is installing - follow the instructions and wait for the driver installation to finish. This can take a few minutes.

  5. Once the updated driver is installed, the hardware lock should be detected and you should be able to launch the Chief Architect program.

  6. If you continue to receive the "No appropriate hardware lock" message, restart your computer and try again.

MORE INFORMATION

Chief Architect, Inc does not write the drivers for the hardware locks that we are using. The device drivers are provided by the company that produces the hardware locks.

Due to security enhancements provided by Windows XP Service Pack 2, the hardware lock drivers that were distributed on Chief Architect 9.5 and older will not always work. These security enhancements are meant to reduce the risk that viruses can run and are meant for the protection of the user.

Additionally, users of Windows 64 bit operating systems will not be able to use the drivers shipped with the Chief Architect installation disks. These operating systems need drivers that are designed to run on Windows 64 bit machines.

Chief Architect is committed to providing support to our users to make sure the software is installed and running correctly and will continue to support installation of the device drivers on currently shipping versions of Chief Architect free of charge.
