In Chief Architect, you can quickly build an automatic roof based on the settings in the Build Roof dialog.  If you need different settings for a particular roof plane in your plan, you can specify these special settings on the Roof tab of the Wall Specification dialog of the wall that this roof plane will bear on when built.


To specify a single automatic roof plane's pitch

1. Open the Chief Architect plan in which you would like to specify the pitch for a particular automatic roof plane.
   
   
   
2. Click on the wall that the roof section you wish to change will bear on to select it, then click the Open Object edit button. 
   
   


3. On the Roof tab of the Wall Specification dialog, specify the desired Pitch.
   
   
   
4. You can also specify how far this roof pitch builds into the structure before it meets the steeper pitch.  To do this, check the box beside Upper to enable the settings that follow, and then:
   
   
   
   
   
   • Specify the desired Upper pitch. In this example, this is 8" in 12".
     
     
   • Specify where to Start the upper pitch - by either specifying at what roof Height to transition from lower to upper pitch, or the measurement in from Baseline where the transition should occur.
     
     
   • In this example, the porch room is 72" deep, so this value is specified from Baseline.
     
     
     
5. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for all walls that will support a roof plane with a non-default pitch. 
   
   
   
6. Select Build> Roof> Build Roof from the menu. In the Build Roof dialog, specify the desired default pitch for your roof, then click OK. 
   
   
   • The roof that results will have the default pitch over all non-gable walls except those for which you specified a different pitch.
