My client would like to install stamped tin ceiling tiles in the vintage home that we are restoring for them. How can I model the furring and ceiling tiles in my plan?
You can model a wide variety of custom ceiling finishes using the Ceiling Finish Definition dialog.
To create a custom ceiling finish
- Launch Chief Architect and Open the plan in which you would like to create a custom ceiling finish.
- In this example, a simple enclosed rectangular room is used.
- Click the Select Objects button, then click in an empty space of the room that requires a custom ceiling finish to select it, then click the Open Object edit button.
- On the Structure panel of the Room Specification dialog, click the Edit button next to Ceiling Finish.
If you plan to use the custom ceiling finish throughout the model, instead of opening the Room Specification dialog, select Edit> Default Settings from the menu and double-click on "Floor" to open the Floor Defaults dialog, click the Edit button next to Ceiling Finish, then proceed with the steps below
- In the Ceiling Finish Definition dialog click in the Thickness field for Layer 1. This layer is likely 5/8" of drywall. Change the Thickness value to equal that of the furring material. In this example, 3/4" is used.
- With Layer 1 still selected, click the Select Material button to open the Select Library Object dialog, search for "Fir Framing", select it and click OK.
- Click the Select Material button again and then click the Plan Materials panel, "Fir Framing" should be selected in the list.
- Click the Copy button to open the Define Material dialog for a new material named "Fir Framing, Copy".
On the General panel:
- Type a short, descriptive name for the new material, such as "Fir Framing 24" OC".
- Specify the desired Spacing OC for the furring. In this example, 24" is used.
- Specify the desired Thickness, which will be the width of the furring strips. In this example 3 1/2" is used.
- Click OK to return to the Ceiling Finish Definition dialog:
- With your new framing material selected for Layer 1, the Structure Type drop-down list becomes available. In this example, "Lumber" is used.
- Click in the Thickness field for Layer 2. This layer is likely 0" of a color such as Bone. Change the Thickness value to that of the stamped tiles. In this example, 1/8" is used.
- With Layer 2 still selected, click the Select Material button and browse to the material you want to represent the tiles. In this example, a printed tile is used.
- When the ceiling finish is defined correctly, click OK to apply your changes and return to the Room Specification dialog.
- Note that changes made to the thickness of the Ceiling Finish do not affect the room's Absolute Ceiling Height nor its Relative Rough Ceiling Height. The Relative Finished Ceiling height, however, will be affected.
- Click OK to close this dialog, as well.
- To see the results so far, create a Perspective Full Camera view of the room.
Specifying a framing layer in the Ceiling Finish Definition dialog allows you to generate secondary ceiling framing to produce a lowered ceiling or furring. Because furring typically runs perpendicular to the joists, Automatic Floor/Ceiling Framing will need to be disabled.
If a living area with a floor platform is defined above the room in question, furring can be generated automatically; if a living area is not present above the room, furring will have to be drawn and replicated manually.
To generate automatic furring
- Select Build> Framing> Build Framing from the menu to open the Build Framing dialog.
- On the Floor panel that corresponds to the floor that the room is located on, place a checkmark in Build Floor Framing and click OK.
- Before clicking OK, make sure that Automatically Build Floor and Ceiling Framing is UNCHECKED.
- Question messages may ask if you want to display the floor framing layers. Click Yes.
- Floor framing for the floor above will now display in floor plan view.
- Select Build> Framing> Joist Direction from the menu, then click and drag to draw a Joist Direction Line that runs perpendicular to the floor joists.
- Select Build> Framing> Build Framing from the menu to open the Build Framing dialog again and return to the same Floor panel as in Step 2.
- Check Build Ceiling Framing and click OK.
- A Question message may ask if you want to display the "Framing, Ceiling" layer. Click Yes.
- Ceiling framing for the current floor - in this case, the furring - will now display in floor plan view, running perpendicular to the floor joists.
- At this point, you can select and Delete the Joist Direction Line drawn in Step 3.
- You can also select Tools> Layer Settings> Display Options from the menu and turn off the display of the "Framing, Floor" layer if you want.
- You may also want to select and delete the doubled-up furring that is generated along the walls.
- If you choose to delete the double furring, use the Extend Object(s) edit tool to increase the length of the furring strips:
- Click on one of the furring strips that run perpendicular to the rest of the furring to select it.
- Click the Extend Object(s) edit button.
- Click the Select Fence edit button, then click and drag to draw a temporary fence line through the furring strips.
- The furring that you draw the fence through will extend to meet the strip you initially selected.
If you require furring in a grid configuration, you'll need to draw the cross pieces manually.
To manually draw and replicate furring
- Click the Select Objects button, then click on a furring strip to select it and click the Open Object edit button.
- On the General panel of the Framing Specification (Ceiling Joist) dialog, make a note of the Bottom Height and Depth values, then click OK.
- Select Build> Framing> Joist from the menu, then click and drag to draw a furring strip that is perpendicular to the existing furring.
- Select the newly drawn furring and click the Open Object edit button. On the General panel of the Framing Specification (Ceiling Joist) dialog:
- Specify the Bottom Height that you noted in Step 2, then click the radio button beside Bottom Height to lock this value.
- Specify the Depth value that you noted in Step 2.
- Specify the desired Length. In this example, 20 1/2" is used (24" OC spacing - 3 1/2 furring width).
- Click OK to close the dialog and apply your changes.
Note: You can also create a copy of an existing furring strip, rotate it 90°, and then reduce its length using its edit handles.
- Move the new furring into position near the corner of the room.
- With the furring strip still selected, click the Multiple Copy edit button.
- Next, click the Multiple Copy Interval edit button to open the Multiple Copy dialog:
- Select Offset Between Copies When Dragging.
- Specify the Primary Offset for Joists, which is measured from center to center. In this example, 24" is used.
- Specify the Secondary Offset for Joists. In this example, 24" is used (20 1/2" furring strip length + 3 1/2" perpendicular strip width).
- Click OK to close the dialog.
- Right-click on the selected furring strip and drag it in the direction that you wish to replicate additional copies.
- As you drag, preview outlines of replicated copies display.
- When you have created the desired number of copies in this first direction:
- Release the right mouse button.
- Without clicking either mouse button, move the pointer in the direction that you would like additional rows of furring strips to be created.
- As you drag, preview outlines of entire rows of replicated copies will display.
- When you have the required furring strips displaying as previews, click the left mouse button once to finish the operation.
